Surf Coast
World-class waves, wild Pacific coastline
About this destination
Chile's central coast is one of South America's best-kept surfing secrets. The Humboldt Current delivers cold, consistent swells year-round, and the relatively undeveloped coastline means you can find empty breaks with a short walk from your camper. Pichilemu is the capital of Chilean surfing, with a long left-hand point break at Punta de Lobos rated among the best in the world. An hour south, Matanzas and Puertecillo offer more isolated alternatives with a wilder, more raw feel. The coast road between them is one of the most scenic drives in central Chile.

Must-see stops
Punta de Lobos
Chile's most famous surf break — a long, powerful left-hander that wraps around a rocky headland south of Pichilemu. The World Surf League holds events here.
Pichilemu town
A laid-back surf town with a bohemian edge. Good restaurants, surf shops and a relaxed atmosphere that welcomes everyone from beginners to pros.
Matanzas
A tiny village with a consistent left-hand point break that works in almost any swell. Often empty mid-week. The surrounding headlands are dramatic.
Puertecillo
The most remote of the three — a rough track leads to a world-class right-hand point break surrounded by rugged cliffs. Worth the drive.
