About this destination

The Lake District is Chile at its most welcoming. The roads are paved, the towns are well-stocked, and the scenery — snow-capped volcanoes reflected in deep blue lakes, ancient araucaria forests and hot springs surrounded by jungle — is spectacular without being punishing. It's a perfect destination for families and first-time campervan travellers who want the freedom of the road without the remoteness of Patagonia. The German colonial heritage of towns like Frutillar and Puerto Varas adds a fascinating cultural layer to the trip.

Highlights

  • Villarrica Volcano
  • Lago Llanquihue
  • Pucon hot springs
  • Osorno stratovolcano

Must-see stops

1

Villarrica Volcano

One of the most active volcanoes in South America, with a permanent lava lake in its crater. You can hike to the summit with a guide, or admire it from Pucón below.

2

Lago Llanquihue

Chile's second-largest lake, with the perfectly conical Osorno Volcano reflected in its surface. The drive around the lake through German settler towns is a highlight.

3

Termas Geométricas

A series of 20 hot spring pools built in a jungle ravine near Coñaripe. Arguably the most beautiful hot springs in South America.

4

Vicente Pérez Rosales Park

Chile's oldest national park, encompassing Osorno Volcano, Lago Todos los Santos and the Petrohué waterfalls. The emerald water is unlike anything else.
