Self-drive Atacama: routes, distances and fuel stops

The Atacama Desert is one of the most driveable destinations in Chile. The main roads are paved, the distances are manageable and San Pedro de Atacama makes an excellent base. Here's how to plan your self-drive.

Base yourself in San Pedro

San Pedro de Atacama is the ideal hub. It has the best campsites, supermarkets, restaurants and tour operators in the region. Every major attraction is within 1–2 hours' drive. Spend your nights here and day-trip to the highlights.

The key circuits

Circuit 1: Valle de la Luna (40 km round trip)

The closest major attraction to San Pedro. Paved road all the way. Leave at 4pm to arrive for golden hour — the Valle turns extraordinary shades of orange and pink at sunset. Entry fee required.

Circuit 2: El Tatio Geysers (180 km round trip)

Drive north on Route 27 (paved, then gravel for the last 30km). Leave San Pedro by 4am to reach the geysers at dawn when the steam columns are highest. The altitude is 4,320m — go slowly.

Circuit 3: Salar de Atacama and flamingo lagoons (100 km round trip)

Head south on Route 23. The Laguna Chaxa viewpoint is inside the salar — free entry, extraordinary flamingo viewing in the morning. Continue to Laguna Cejar for the salt lagoon swim.

Fuel stops

  • San Pedro de Atacama: two petrol stations, well-stocked
  • Calama (100 km west): larger city, better prices
  • No fuel available at any attraction — always leave San Pedro with a full tank
  • The El Tatio circuit uses approximately 25L — plan accordingly

Altitude: the main risk

San Pedro sits at 2,400m. El Tatio is at 4,320m. Altitude sickness is real and affects fit, healthy people with no warning. Symptoms include headache, nausea and fatigue. Treatment: descend, rest, hydrate. Don't rush to altitude on your first day in the desert.

Important

Spend your first night in Calama (2,250m) before driving to San Pedro. It helps your body adjust before you go higher.
